OUR WORKS STEAM BATH AND SPA
Saunas and Turkish baths are increasingly being sold to private households. The sauna was created by nomadic peoples in northern Europe, mainly in what is now Finland. The purpose of sauna baths was to purify the body and spirit, but the systems were rudimentary, the first relying only on hot stones.
With advances in technology, today we have several types of sauna. In both steam and dry saunas, the high temperatures, which can reach over 80°C, activate thermoregulatory mechanisms.
They promote a significant increase in heart rate, between 50 and 75 per cent - similar to the increase caused by physical activity.
Heat also causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow and lowering blood pressure, the action of eccrine glands - responsible for secreting odourless sweat, which cools the body - the action of apocrine glands - which secrete sweat along with other organic compounds, such as fats, as well as affecting other organs and tissues.
The most common ritual consists of short baths, from 5 to 20 minutes on average, interspersed with periods of body cooling, such as baths and dives at lower temperatures. It is also recommended that the sauna bath be followed by fluid intake to avoid dehydration. And the weekly amount should not exceed 3 sessions.
What are the benefits?
With all the body's reaction to intense heat, the result is natural and simple treatments against medical conditions to a lesser degree and with momentary impacts, but without curative functions, only palliative. Among the best benefits of the sauna are:
1. Purification of the skin
Heat is one of the main assets to ensure skin cleansing. With the increase in temperature, the skin temperature is the first to rise, the result is greater oxygenation of the tissue and opening of the pores.
The process helps to eliminate impurities accumulated in the skin, allowing synthetic and organic substances to be secreted.
Therefore, it is important to take a cold shower right after the sauna, so the substances are completely removed from the body and the bath still helps to close the pores, avoiding new contaminations, especially in steam saunas.
Some skin diseases can also be alleviated with sauna baths, since the transport of nutrients is facilitated, hydration becomes more efficient, collagen production increases, dead cells of the most superficial layer are also removed, the functioning of deeper layers is also improved and products are better absorbed - when applied after the sauna, never before or during.
2. Airway purification
When combined with the use of aromatic oils with decongestant properties (lavender, mint and rosemary oil, for example), the sauna helps to clear the airways and relieve the feeling of congestion.
The steam and heat also help oxygen to enter the lungs better by dilating the bronchi in the lungs.
3. Improved heart condition
According to scientific studies, another benefit of sauna and frequent baths is increased heat tolerance, with reduced blood pressure variation, heart rate and reduced blood flow to internal organs.
In addition, as mentioned, the sauna has a similar action to light physical exercise and its constant use improves heart function, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and helps to reduce other clinical symptoms, according to the American College of Cardiology (ACC).
4. Reduces fluid retention
Although it does not lose weight, a sauna session can guarantee a loss of 0.5 to 2.5 kg. This is only possible due to the elimination of liquids, only water and mineral salts, through sweating, that is, there is no elimination of fat or burning of calories.
However, the elimination of toxins and liquids helps prevent cellulite (which is formed when these substances accumulate in adipose tissue) and, when done regularly, combats fluid retention.
5. Relaxation and well-being
The warm and pleasant environment also promotes relaxation and tranquillity, with repercussions on the user's health.
The sauna does not treat pain or joint problems, but relieves the sensation of pain and promotes muscle relaxation, speeding up recovery time from injuries, muscle atrophy and intense pain.
In addition, insomnia and sleep problems can be improved with the sauna. The wear and tear caused by the activity demands that the body has adequate rest, promoting better nights of sleep.
The heat also has the ability to stimulate the action of the endocrine glands, which help regulate mood and metabolism.
Which type of sauna to choose?
The commercialised models are the steam sauna and the dry sauna. On the Paraíso das Bombas website, you can find electric steam saunas, gas steam saunas and electric dry saunas.
The steam sauna, also known as humid, is the one that generates heat, used mainly in warmer regions, such as Brazil. The internal temperature can vary between 40 and 45 ºC.
This type of sauna must be covered with waterproof materials, usually ceramics and tablets. As the name implies, the sauna becomes a very humid environment, which leaves the sensation of wet skin with the mixture of sweat and water coming from the humidity of the environment.
The dry sauna, the famous Finnish sauna, is the system that leaves the environment free of moisture or steam, with this the temperature varies between 60 and 80 ºC. Very common in colder countries and regions, the environment must be all covered with wood, the system is internal and depends on a heat generator.
